2019 ISRI Annual Report

ISRI.ORG 11 2019 Annual Report Impact in a Year of Change In partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce, ISRI announced a members-only trade mission to Indonesia and Malaysia focused on scrap metal , which will take place in 2020. In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards asked ISRI to provide technical expertise as it establishes standards for a range of imported scrap commodities. ISRI also received a seat on the panel developing standards for ferrous scrap imports. Working closely with Indonesian government officials in Washington and Jakarta, ISRI provided industry expertise and guidance on incorporating market-defined standards in the country’s scrap import regulations. ISRI also trained inspectors to ensure continued market access for recovered fiber in Indonesia. At both the Basel Convention and the OECD, ISRI minimized the damage to market access for plastic scrap globally by including references to the ISRI Specs, thus allowing the continued movement of high value, commodity-grade plastic scrap. ISRI’s work with the Malaysian government resulted it agreeing to release insulated copper wire and insulated aluminum wire it had held at the port over misunderstanding of the nature of the materials.
