2019 ISRI Annual Report

ISRI.ORG 15 2019 Annual Report Impact in a Year of Change ISRI released the 2019 Industry Compensation & Benefits Survey report in November, which contains the most up-to-date compensation and benefits data for the recycling industry, covering over 80 different job codes for both salaried and hourly workers. The Pacific Northwest Chapter created a pilot pre-apprenticeship certificate program with Portland Community College to provide students with critical skills needed to work in the scrap recycling industry. Other ISRI chapters have expressed an interest in replicating the program. In partnership with JASON Learning and as part of its youth outreach program, ISRI released Scrap Titans, a board game to teach kids about the economics of recycling. ” One of the critical gaps we face in our industry is a pool of trained workers with the ability to be productive in our scrapyards. It’s not sufficient to be ‘just a body,’ as we face a loss of investment and time when workers remain engaged for [just] short periods of time. Working with community colleges creates an avenue [for us] to create pre- employment training focused on scrapyard operations, as well as to identify individuals who are willing to make the commitment to work long term in our industry. –Peter Van Houten, Bob’s Metals “
