ISRI.ORG 17 2019 Annual Report Impact in a Year of Change ISRI developed a “Hazard Recognition in Shipping/ Receiving and Loading Dock Areas” safety training program with $160,000 in funding from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Susan Harwood Training Grant Program. Thirty-eight member companies operating 77 facilities with more than 2,750 workers participated in ISRI’s Safety Stand-Down Day on June 12, 2019. The day focused on identifying hazards, reducing risk, eliminating accidents, and saving lives. ISRI worked proactively with stakeholders (including manufacturers) throughout 2019 to develop effective safety guidance for managing hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries , including electric vehicle batteries. With 100,000 li-ion batteries being manufactured daily around the world, ISRI also is working to influence future battery designs and control systems. In 2019, ISRI’s EHS staff organized and presented 21 train-the-trainer classes —16 on material handlers and five on powered industrial vehicles—for 11 member companies. Participation in the Circle of Safety Excellence grew to over 100 companies, and ISRI launched three award categories—Best in Class, Rising Star, and Superior Achievement—to recognize member companies for outstanding commitment to the safety of their employees. Highlights of this year’s two ISRI Safety & Environmental Council (ISEC) meetings included tours of a shredder operation and an electronics recycling facility and discussions on topical workplace safety issues. In collaboration with the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, ISRI released the video “Radiation Safety in Scrap Recycling” to help workers identify radioactive sources, isolate radioactive the material, and notify the proper authorities. Participation in the Superfund Recycling Equity Act (SREA) Reasonable Care Compliance Program remained strong in 2019, with 175 companies—including two nonmembers—ordering reports. ISEC experiences an energetic 2019. ISEC attendees discussed the challenges in the work place, crisis management, shared work-related experienced that promoted group problem solving, and developed Recommended Industry Safety Practices.
